I believe in living life on your own terms. To experience life from your perspective. Not someone else's. Every job or position I have taken in my past has always been something that I was surprised that I was being paid to learn. This concept has supported me all through my life.
There may come a time when you feel you are ready to take the mindset that you can "Make Art Your Business" You can still be working and learning with someone else along the way. Just keep the mindset that your art can support your dreams and desires.
Are you ready to take your Art to the next level and to start creating a business? This workshop will focus on the 12 steps of what it takes to start selling your art and your ideas.
Do you have a cohesive body of work? Are you ready to sell now, or do you need more time to prepare? How to price your artwork and services? How to apply for grant funding, to approach galleries, hold shows, exhibits, enter contests and more.... Make money doing what you love!

We create art because it is a calling, a force, an energy and desire to see something, never done before, come to fruition.
We create because we love to use our hands, make choices, and to experiment with all types of mediums. We love what we do!
We love to create so much that we don't know what else to do with our time, thoughts and energy. We always need new supplies, materials and time. How do we feed our addiction to create?
...We find a way to sell our Art and our Art Services Besides selling my art , I enjoy teaching others how to create art.
I would hope this website is able to get you inspired and will move you forward into a creative business and lifestyle.
Design Your Destiny!
Developing a Business is... another aspect of "Creating" it is only working with another medium.
Similar to learning to work with a brush and paint to create a painting, or a needle and thread to make a quilt, or your choice in beads in stringing a necklace, it is the tools you use, and the choices you make to create a beautiful piece of art as it is the choices you make to create a functioning profitable arts business.
Of course looking at the big picture can be daunting and overwhelming. I'm suggesting you take each step one at a time, at the time they come up and are important. You will learn what step to take next as time goes on. You will grow with your business.
Think about what you wish your business is to look like, feel like, and be!
Some of the questions you need to consider and ask yourself.
"Who, What, When, Where, Why"
Who do you see your self being as an artist and business person? Think of someone, and their business as an example of where you would like to see yourself in the future. This will change as you grow your business.
What will you do to make your business the best it can be and similar in scope to the art and business you admire? This too will change and grow as you become more focused on what is important to you and your business.
When do you see your business coming into fruition, is NOW even the time? If not, what more do you need to do to have it be "THE TIME?"
Where would you like to see yourself in a week, a month, six months, the next year, two or five years down the road? Looking ahead helps to setting goals and to managing your time.
Where do you envision yourself spending most of your time? In the studio, at arts and craft shows, exhibiting in galleries, teaching your craft, placing your art on the shelves of other businesses? Whom do you envision spending most of your time with, children, adults, business people? There are so many aspects of society that will open up to you when you begin your journey to making Art Your Business, you might like to think about how and where you wish to spend your time and days.
Importantly...Why does what you do or wish to embark on mean so much to you? This is your biggest question and it is the one that will carry you along during the challenging times of owning a business. If you look at it as your reason for being, you might find it easier to move forward and onward in those times when your vision, confidence and motives are being tested. If you can honestly answer these questions you are on your way...
Be honest and real with yourself, as you are "creating a Business you are creating... "YOUR" life!
An important reminder...as your business grows, You will grow with your business. When you come to a point where you have to shift gears, with time, you will have the knowledge and experience to shift smoothly and effortlessly. We all wish for our lives and our business' to continue to grow, expand and evolve into what it is meant to be. We wish to live a creative fulfilling life!
Be Patient . Be Clear . Be Open Hold onto the vision of your business & your life's work. As you move forward your life may take on a most exciting direction, one you had not counted on, or even conceived of.
Enjoy the journey! Make it a creative one!
If having solo or joint shows in amazing galleries is your focus, of how you wish to make money with your art, do you...
Walk the Galleries? Do you attend shows? Do you meet the Artist showing? Do you notice and analyze what they do well and what you might be able to do better?
My suggestion: Research and research some more, ask questions, evaluate the marketing and presentation of the artist and gallery. Visualize and imagine it being YOUR SHOW ...and all it can possibly be!
Approaching a Gallery and making your Art happen on several different levels... Read and learn what I call the #12 in Art Business!
Who are you, what do you do, and another "W" word comes to mind ... . WRITE . It helps if in addition to being able to talk about your art you are also able to write about it! Being a small business owner you are the Advertising Director, the Marketing Department, the Public Relations officer and the Social Media Administrator for your company.
What you don't know you can hire out or trade merchandise or services, also consider taking a class or two in the areas of which you feel you need help or more confidence to move your business forward.
Other avenues of knowledge can be gained in joining like minded leagues, clubs and associations, ask questions in those areas of interest where you feel you need to gain more knowledge and insight. Write, take pictures and share what you do. As your business grows, so will you!
. Arts & Crafts . Classes/Workshops . . Publishing . Offering your work in the Arts and Crafts industry can be challenging, rewarding and also profitable. It all depends on how you perceive the work you create.
Many avenues are available to you to place your arts and crafts items in the hands of the right people; at craft fairs, selling wholesale, and making money selling on-line, plus, in providing articles to publications that provide how-to-directions.
By offering classes in how to do what you do, you are able to establish a following of admirers within your community. You become the expert in your field. Since you have already prepared a syllabus by teaching your craft, on how to do what it is you do, you are able to stretch yourself to presenting your class instruction in step-by-step examples to specific industry magazines, or consider on-line instruction in those areas that are similar with what you do and offer. Providing classes on-line has become a very lucrative business within itself.
The Do it Yourself (DIY) industry, on-line and in print publishers are ripe for exciting ideas and designs that you may have overlooked though out the years as being just too simple. Well "simple" is exactly what the publishers are looking for. Look into this area of offering your art and services if it interests you.
I have great admiration for specific groups, associations, and government agencies that have helped to further my goals, expand my mind, and appreciate and respect my talents.
Joining like minds is where you also wish to be when working your Arts Business. Associate with those people that are able to visualize and further your dreams, aspirations and goals! Help them with theirs! Design Your Destiny!
Classes, Workshops Speaking Engagements Consider Teaching your skill set to others. Teaching is very lucrative and it presents YOU as the expert in your field! Speaking about what you love, feel confidence in, and know, at Community Colleges, Recreational and Senior Centers, even Art Stores, is a definite way to increase your income and get the word out, as to what you offer as as an Artist and Business.. A variety of different venues of offering your expertise are available consider one or several of the avenues listed:
Community College Community Education Contact your local Community College, The Community Education department directly to offer the classes you wish to teach at the times that are convenient for you and your schedule. Create a following and offer a variety of technique classes and experiences your students will delight in learning.
Cultural Centers / Museums Non-profit and for profit Museums and Cultural Centers in your area are looking to grow their membership and their revenue base. Many today offer classes as their way of getting people interested in what they do for the Arts. Contact the Education Director - they will be happy to hear from you.
Plus many of these entities have a gift shop, where if you teach, you may also be able to sell your wares!
Local & Regional Recreational Centers Do not discount your local Recreational Center. They have classroom space they wish to fill with sounds of laughter and delight at learning new skills as well. Similar to the community college system, recreational centers work about three to six months out for scheduling of classes. Get in there and see if you and your work are a good fit!
Senior Centers / Retirement Communities Senior Centers and Retirement Communities are ready and willing to engage their community with exactly what you wish to offer, something fun and self expressive, art time! I just started in this arena and so excited to be in the company of the older generation!
Teaching our Youth at Risk & Individuals with Disabilities Find your place to teach and be heard, where you can make a difference in someones life. You know where to be. Look into your heart! Be an influence to a troubled youth or a challenged adult!
Public Speaking Engagements Consider your local interests groups, Art Associations, and special interest groups, which are also your interests. Look at organizing a symposium of like and similar, yet different speakers to present topics in the same venue, offer it for one day, evening, weekend or ? Remember it is your business: you decide the venue, topics, or classes of instruction. Create the experience, live your joy, and make a difference while being involved, and sharing what you know with your community.
Creating an Arts Business has been my passion. For years I considered, and "the Government "considered my Art and Craft a hobby. When I took the leap to create a business with my talents in art a whole world of opportunities opened up and my mind set changed. Taking the leap of faith from "Right Brain" thinking: working from the creative side of the brain, and joining it with the "Left Brain" side of thinking, I realized: I can make everyday a creative, productive money making day.
Creating and developing an Arts Business is not a direction to take for everyone. It takes focus, hard work, and determination, all actions directed in leading you to the big picture, and your specific goal. Owning any business in art or otherwise becomes a passion, a way of life.
Being an artist, producing art for yourself is great, it is wonderful, spiritual, and being expressive and the best therapy ever! Your family and friends love to receive your handmade items. You always have gifts on hand at a moments notice.
Being in the mindset that your art is your message and vehicle for communicating to the world is a whole different story. Your message is key, and the switch when the right brained artist to the left brained businessperson takes place, at least it was for me, I had larger visions and the "Big Picture" gave me a tangible goal. What I was heading towards became real and obtainable, each time I headed in the direction of my heart and true message.
That switch in thinking and doing helps one to find ones purpose in life as an artist and as an individual human being contributing to the whole of society.
Think about it...Business’s are either providing a service or a product in their specific areas or industries - in the Artist’s case it can be both the service and the product. How lucky are we as Creatives to have two options instead of one. Our lives become richer and more rounded, plus enjoyable and entertaining for us and those individuals who cross our paths.
Knowing what you wish to convey as an Arts Business owner is key. Focusing on the end result and the change or impact you wish to make on society and your community is knowing what art to produce and how to get your message across.
